Mark Twain Neighborhood Business Invitation

Dear Mark Twain Neighborhood Business

At a special meeting of the Mark Twain Neighborhood Association on Saturday March 15th, a large gathering of members voted unanimously to modify bylaws and boundaries of the Association to include all residents and businesses located north of Constitution, south of I-40 and between San Pedro and Louisiana. Now formally recognized by the City’s Office of Neighborhood Coordination (ONC), we are pleased to welcome this almost doubling of the Association’s size and to announce some further initiatives.

We expect to launch within this month a website to provide all residents, on a 24/7 basis, with current information and practical resources. One section of the website will be a “directory” of the businesses within our borders, located along San Pedro, Lomas, and Louisiana. This listing will be free of charge and will encourage our residents to both know and patronize your business. To that end, we would be grateful to receive from you the following:

  • Business Name
  • Business Logo
  • Business Address & Contact info (phone #, website)
  • Short description of service(s) offered
  • Hours of operation

The information can be sent to jaemes1@mac.com or, if in a brochure or document can be picked up from you.

The Albuquerque Neighborhood Association Regulation Ordinance (NARO) requires residents and businesses to formally affirm membership in the Association each year to have voting rights on issues put before members (elections, bylaw amendments, etc.). No payment of dues is required; donations are voluntary. Formal membership is not required to attend meetings or receive announcements.

Membership lists and resident information is not shared outside the Association…..…ever.

The 2025 Business Membership Affirmation Form is below. Completed signed form can be mailed or emailed with scan or phone photo to me at Bardean12@comcast.net with cc: to Treasurer Michele Benton mkbenton@swcp.com and Board Member Jaemes Shanley jaemes1@mac.com.

Pros and Cons of Redevelopment Plans

Exploring the Future of Albuquerque's State Fairgrounds

The redevelopment of the Albuquerque State Fairgrounds is a topic of significant interest, with various proposals on the table. On the pro side, the redevelopment aims to boost the local economy by attracting new businesses and increasing tourism. Modernizing the fairgrounds could also provide more community spaces and enhance cultural events, making it a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike. However, there are concerns about potential downsides, such as the disruption to existing businesses during construction and the risk of increased traffic congestion. Additionally, some community members worry about preserving the historical aspects of the fairgrounds while integrating new developments. Balancing these pros and cons is crucial for a successful redevelopment that benefits the entire community.

Key Statistics on Redevelopment Impact

According to recent studies, the redevelopment of the fairgrounds could potentially increase local business revenue by 20% over the next five years. The project is expected to create approximately 500 new jobs during the construction phase and an additional 300 permanent jobs once completed. Surveys indicate that 75% of local residents support the redevelopment, citing improved amenities and increased cultural activities as major benefits. However, 40% of respondents expressed concerns about potential increases in property taxes and living costs. These statistics highlight the mixed sentiments and economic implications surrounding the redevelopment plans.

Mark Twain Neigborhood Association; Information about Membership.

Welcome Neighbors!

At a special meeting of the Mark Twain Neighborhood Association on Saturday March 15 at Jerry Cline Tennis Center, a large gathering of members voted unanimously to modify bylaws and boundaries of the Association to include all residents located north of Constitution, south of I-40 and between San Pedro and Louisiana. Now formally recognized by the ONC, we are delighted to have you with us and look forward to meeting you at future Association meetings, community improvement collaborations, and social events.

Our Mark Twain Neighborhood, like many others in Albuquerque, faces major new challenges (up zoning by City Council, NM Expo redevelopment proposals, decline of small businesses along major corridors, unhoused population incursions, crime, etc.). A summary of the implications for Mark Twain of the O-24-69 ordinance passed by City Council Jan. 6th is printed on the back of this flyer. We believe that making our voice heard, as loudly and largely as possible is not only our democratic right but also our responsibility. Adding your voices and opinions makes us stronger and better.

The Association’s next priority project is establishment of a website to provide all residents, on a 24/7 basis, with current information and practical resources. We aim go live within two months.

PLEASE NOTE: The Albuquerque City Neighborhood Association Regulation Ordinance (NARO) requires residents and adjacent businesses to formally affirm membership in the Association each year to have voting rights on issues put before members (officer elections, bylaw amendments, etc.) but no payment of dues is required. Formal membership is not required to attend meetings or receive announcements. We have Association Board positions open which we would love to have filled by members from the “north side”. Please let us know if you are interested.

The Association welcomes donations to support our projects but they are 100% voluntary.

Membership lists and resident information is not shared outside the Association…..…ever.
